Autism Network Organizations

Asperger/Autism Network (AANE)

The Asperger/Autism Network (AANE) is a non-profit organization founded in 1996. They found this network immediately after releasing DSM-4 which includes the broad definition of autism and Asperger. It is founded by parents and professionals.

It is not funded by the government. They are independent. They are funded by memberships and donations. Foundations support the organization as well. There are a number of volunteers to help individuals with autism or Asperger’s syndrome and their families, friends, educators, and so on within this network.

It is an organization that provides helps and support to individuals on the autism spectrum. Asperger’s syndrome is one of those disorders on the spectrum. They try to help those people in order to build a meaningful life. Apart from individuals themselves, they provide help, information, training, support, and advocacy to autism-related people, at most to their families. The most important feature is respected within this network.

Thanks to this organization, individuals and families have an opportunity to meet other families with autism community and professionals. They have a chance to extend their families without judgment. According to their vision, no matter which diagnosis you receive, they will gladly help and provide support to you.

In addition to providing help and support to individuals who are affected by autism spectrum disorder, they also take care of people who have other neurological problems. Their main aim is to help people. It is not important to get professional diagnoses in order to get benefit from their services. It is enough to feel that you need help.

In this network organization, they also work with other organizations and partners. They are not a local network, however, they work with people all around the world. This network has gained popularity over the years. With technological advances, people have easy access to this network. This network is sustained by the people who they serve. These people are autism-related families and professionals. In order to include people with autism, they give an opportunity to them to work within the organization.

The location you are living in does not matter in order to obtain help, support, information, training, education, coaching, and advocacy from the autism network. The offices they have are mostly available by car. Otherwise, they provide transportation without any problem.

Interactive Autism Network

It is an online network. In order to facilitate researches about autism spectrum disorder, lead advancements, and provide treatments. Interactive Autism Network was established in 2006. They support both the community and researchers related to autism.

We can consider this network as a library. If you have any questions, any doubts, or any concerns related to autism spectrum disorder, here would be your first station. This network provides easy access to knowledge and information. Everyone who needs any kind of help and support can easily benefit from this organization.

They want to help people in the case of understanding what autism is and how the research processes have been conducted, providing the latest findings and information, understanding the importance of autism researches, and how important to participate in them and understanding the reciprocal influence of individuals themselves and research reports.

As the name implied, it is a network. In this organization, they bring autism-related people together. These people are individuals themselves, their families, their siblings, their friends, their educators, therapists, researchers, and professionals related to the autism area. They try to raise awareness about how important to work collaboratively in this case, how important to develop strategies proper for the individuals and their environment, and improve the life quality of those individuals on the autism spectrum.

If they participate in this network, they do not need to leave their houses in order to obtain help and information. Within this network, they provide enough and related information and service online. If the individual is a child, parents should provide enough information and upload a doctor’s report to get sufficient service. If the individual is an adult, that adult should share everything with the network in order to get sufficient service. After providing enough information, researchers who work in the organization are ready to do every possible thing for them to make their lives easier.

It is an undeniable fact that even though there are many pieces of research that are claimed to conduct, not all of them have been published. There are many reasons behind it and the most important one is researchers do not find enough participants to get accurate results. So, in this case, it is important to teach them how important it is in order to improve their life quality. Individuals themselves, families, friends, and the environment should be informed enough about this issue. In this network organization, it is the number one priority. Through partnerships, they kind of solve these problems. Directly or indirectly, individuals and their families get to benefit from this participation. They have a chance to learn more about autism, its effects, and its consequences

Autism Support Network

Autism Support Network gives the opportunity to easily access people within the autism community. Thousands of individuals and families with autism spectrum disorder can connect with each other throughout this network. They have a chance to see and observe different strategies, treatment plans, therapy plans, and daily routines. They have a chance to see that they are not alone in this journey. They are not the only ones who live these struggles and challenges.

They have 3 main aims which are being connected, having a guide, and unify. Their main aim is to help people whose struggles are undertaken and underestimated. They try to improve their daily life quality and relationships. They provide different treatment plans, therapeutic strategies, and up-to-date information to those people.

It is free to join this network. Their intention is to create a collective mind about autism issues, and providing sufficient knowledge, support and help to them who are somehow related to autism spectrum disorder. They want them to get benefit from these advantages no matter where they live.

In this network, they have a specific vision and mission. Their vision is improving the life quality of individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their families and providing easy access to comprehensive care services within the communities they live in. They have two missions. One of them is promoting comprehensive medical care for individuals on the autism spectrum, mostly children and adolescents. The other one is helping and supporting researches in order to improve their services evidence-based.

Mostly, researchers and professionals related to autism areas get benefits from those evidence-based protocols. It is an important step to improve the life quality of those individuals on the autism spectrum.

At the moment, there are more than 46000 members have participated in this network. These people are individuals with autism themselves, their families, their siblings, their friends, professionals in the autism areas, and anyone who wants to have more educated about autism.

Care is a very important issue within this network. There are more than 30000 members who are supported at Autism Treatment Network. They are the first ones all around the world who help those individuals in a medical way. They help researchers to conduct their researches. It is important to be evidence-based, so, they have developed guidelines for that. Their services are free. There are thousands of people who get training thanks to the Autism Treatment Network.

Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN)

It is a non-profit organization. This organization run by individuals with autism for individuals with autism. It was established in order to be a voice of them. Within this organization, they want to be heard by the community. They claim that they have the same right as the rest of the community and they are right. In order to get their human rights, they become one. They want equality in any case, such as access, rights, opportunities, and so on. Their motto is “there cannot be anything in the community without us and related to us.”

The people within this network work for civil rights basically. They try to improve public perceptions and awareness of autism spectrum disorder. There are many people who work for this aim. These people could be on the autism spectrum or not. Individuals with autism, individuals without autism, families, friends, educators, professionals, and basically anyone who wants to create awareness about them can participate in this network easily.

People in this network work for empowering people with autism spectrum disorder all around the world, not locally. They support them to get control of their lives and to decide about their future. It is more than being local, it is a national network. It gives an opportunity for those people to raise their voices to get control of their lives.

They organize cultural activities, training, and seminars for self-advocates with autism. They provide information, knowledge, researches, and projects about autism, disability rights, and systems in order to make them aware of all those issues. They seek 100% involvement of individuals on the spectrum. Because of the fact that, in the end, these are their rights and their lives, they have to talk about and be part of this process.

In order to make people aware that they exist, it is important for them to be a part of this process. They need to make people understand that they have equal rights with them, they deserve to live in the same conditions, and they should have an equal right to study and work. Their policy is based on researches in order to provide the best they can do.

College Autism Network

It is a non-profit organization. They have started their work during the fall semester of 2014 and they became a non-profit organization in January 2016. This network is mostly for college students with an autism spectrum disorder. They support them to improve their access, their experiences, and the outcomes of these steps. Their mission is based on advocacy, research, and teaching. They work based on research with 2 main reasons.

They empower those students on the autism spectrum to raise their voices in academia. They provide free and easy access to the materials they need. Those materials are mostly specifically designed materials to help them with their transitions and non-student life.

They support researches about autism. Both qualitative and quantitative methods have been supported by them. They conduct workshops and training for students, their parents, researchers, and professors.

At the basic level, The College Autism Network wants student well-being, educational achievement, and institutional responsiveness. They want students with an autism spectrum disorder to feel confident and comfortable like many other typically developed students. They want them to have the same quality of education. In the case of achievement, they want a student with an autism spectrum disorder to have an equal right to graduate from college. In order to accomplish these steps, educational institutions should be responsive enough. They have to take care of those students’ needs. With the help of highlighted contributions, they may have a chance to make their institutions and build their studies.

At College Autism Network, they provide their services free. It is easy to access its services. Their goal is multi-faceted. It means that they need to collaboratively in order to reach their aims and create meaningful contributions. In order to meet their abilities and interests, and fulfill their needs and opportunities, they don’t want to work for them, they want to work with them. They use this network in order to make those student’s voices hearable.

They obtain 4 basic ideas to run this network. These are holistic integration, being distinctive, not disabled, identity intersectionality, and shared responsibility. They proactively question, challenge, and explore. They don’t accept that those students are distinctive. They are unique. Autism itself is not enough to define someone and should be neither. So, take care of those students’ personalities and give importance to what they think. It is not something reducible to identity. Colleges have an important place in those students’ lives. Thanks to this opportunity, they can share, create, and maintain an understanding of autism, being respectful, giving importance to values, and opportunities. Colleges give them a chance to create their identities.

In the College Autism Network, they try to build a bridge between the society and the autism community. Instead of tagging them, they prefer the person-first method. They call students with autism by their names instead of autistic. It is an important issue for building that bridge.

They have conducted studies to explore the life of college students with an autism spectrum disorder. These researches are important to make their lives easier. They use unobtrusive qualitative methods. The results are still not sufficient enough. There are still many students who don’t feel confident and comfortable on the campus and college. They are in need of these feelings and opportunities like other students. Even though there are many services available for those, they are not sufficient.
